Final Legislative Update for 2009
The 2009 Legislative Session has come to a close, and FAB Professionals is proud to announce that FAB along with your support defeated the Barbering Intern Bill (SB 1566). This Bill, if passed, would have created an internship program for barber students, which would have allowed unlicensed and untrained professionals to practice barbering in Florida under dubious supervision. FAB Professionals monitored the legislation closely and called upon members to their contact legislators and the Bill sponsor to oppose it. FAB Professionals provided members and legislators with information from states with internship programs that demonstrated internship programs create additional financial and operational concerns within the state. Most notably, states that sponsored internships for students had a higher percentage of unlicensed activity and a larger operational burden creating a higher cost for the state.
The DBPR Regulation Bill (HB1413), which was initiated by the Governor's Office, also died in committee. FAB Professionals was in support of this legislation which sought to create a more streamlined application process for cosmetology by allowing students to take the state exam prior to graduation.
The only industry-specific bill to pass this year was House Bill 425, which eliminated the
the barbering practical component to the state barbering exam. FAB Professionals was in support of this legislation.
As previously noted, the Tattooing Bill, which would have included permanent makeup professionals was withdrawn by the bill drafter, the Tattooing Guild, to re-write and simplify. FAB Professionals was supportive of the premise of the bill is looking forward to working with the Tattooing Guild this year to craft a better and easier-to-implement bill.

FAB PRO Hair, Skin and Nail Certifications are HERE! FAB Professionals is the exclusive provider of Prometric’s National Certification for Hair, Nail and Skin professionals in Florida. In response to last year's vetoed cosmetology bill, which sought to increase hours and require an examination for skin and nail technicians, FAB launched the voluntary FAB PRO National Hair, Nail and Skin Certifications so that students will be better prepared, more marketable and obtain licensure in other states more easily. FAB understands that Florida’s students need to be able to compete with other professionals on a national level and the National Exam sets the industry standard.

5 Hairdresser Business Strategies for Success
By: Bill Slater
In our everyday lives and in our businesses we need to begin again to look at the fundamentals that makes up a lucrative hairdresser business.
I read a story once about Jack Nicklaus, who for all ya'll that don't know is a golfing legend, who was reflecting about the way that he began every new season. He went to his teaching pro and asked him show him how to hold the club, address the ball, etc. He asked his trainer to go over the most fundamental aspects of his profession and success. As professionals, we need to do the same.
Learning is invaluable tool that can replace some of the exaggerations of how to run a successful hairdresser business that we come up against from our friends in the industry that have never built up their sales. If we listen to the platitudes and boasting we can become callous and indifferent, and our clients will certainly know it and start to look around at other salons for the services that we provide. But the real accomplishment for us is to keep learning continuously and never think we have actually arrived.
So let's just consider some of the many facets of conducting a successful salon business:
1. Your customers are #1: This is as basic as it gets and yet we're all conditioned to let it fly and let our folks know specifically what we feel ... like, "don't they know just how good I really am? I'm just having a bad day today so they need to stop complaining to me all the time."
Do we really have bad days? I mean does it rain on the just and the unjust? Yes of course, but we've got to show our recognition of our clientele and respect them just like we want them to respect us. Actually, would you like to try a little test with your customers? Exceed their expectations with your service and then watch to see how they respond; are you game?
2. There's gold in your list: I sure hope you have one because this you must have or develop your own list of customers that you can stay in touch with on a constant basis. Just how good would it be if you produced a totally loyal client base that will keep coming in and tell others about you? How do you develop this and continue to give them more value because they're your clientele?
3. Lifetime customer value: This is some terminology that most in business pay attention to or use in their businesses. And it's a mistake. You can't actually know how good you can serve you clients until you know precisely what they're worth to you in your business in the long run. Or as it's called, their lifetime customer value. You will need to learn an easy way to calculate this cost per visit, products bought, visits per year, times 5 years.
4. New Faces: First time patrons should have some special attention from you each and every time you're able to get one in your salon. Have you ever been to a mechanic for the first time and wondered how you were going to get screwed? I mean treated? Have you ever been a little short on patience with those that come in to you the first time? I'm sure that you haven't, but we've all experienced that uncomfortable time ourselves, haven't we?
5. Be fresh: And I don't mean being forward with your clientele, but infusing something new into your salon or station to change the look of what you started with XXX years ago. You do know what I'm referring to don't you? Come on spice it up a bit. Do something every once in a while to bring some novel look in your space and enjoy it with your customers. Make them laugh, offer them a cup of green tea of coffee or bottled water. How about a donut hole? Don't give them those peppermints that are so old the cellophane is stuck to them. Give us a break!
Here's some things to consider and then ... make it happen. Come on, give yourself to your clients and see if they don't respond to your kindness.
How awesome would it be to become one of the prominent salon businesses in your city? You can and you should because you are the worth your best effort.
